This chapter basically just pisses me off and makes me hate Dumbeldore for letting Harry be raised in such an environment. Yes, I know there's the whole blood wards excuse, but surely he could have come up with some other alternative.

Also, there's spoiling your child on their birthday and then there's thirty-nine gifts. Again, no wonder Dudley was so awful.

So, the Ministry knows when he performs magic after starting Hogwarts, but is oblivious to the insane amounts of accidental magic beforehand? Do they not start stalking people until they get their wand? They can't even tell who at the address used magic, so kids in wizard families can get away with all sorts of shit.

my assumption re: accidental magic is despite not living in a wizard household, Harry gets a lot of leeway towards the beginning because Dumbles.

Probably true. For all the things I think that Dumbledore did very much wrong, he also let Harry get away with pretty much everything.
